In readiness for Google’s mobile-first index, coming in 2018, it’s time to ensure the mobile experience of your website is responsive; changing to fit the device it’s being read on.
Responsive design takes into account desktop monitors, laptops, tablets and mobile phones.
The mobile-first index means that rankings for desktop and mobile devices will be based on a site’s mobile experience.
Why this move? Well, most searches on Google are now from mobile devices. This is clearly backed by statistics from Ofcom the UK’s communications regulator; it’s figures for Q1 2017 show that 66% of people use their mobile phone to access the internet.
So, in 2018, Google will judge your desktop and mobile sites’ rank worthiness on your mobile implementation, rather than desktop-first – this has always made sense until now as searchers were previously primarily using desktop computers. If your site isn’t ready then now is the time to prepare.
If you have a desktop site and a mobile site, delivering perhaps less content, look at getting a responsive site. Think about the content you are delivering; does it offer a good mobile experience and provide what the searcher is looking for?
