Statistics for how long people actively spend online each day and digital adspend figures are indicators that any small or medium-sized business is missing a massive opportunity if they don’t invest in and take full advantage of online marketing.
The Internet Advertising Bureau UK (IAB) and United Kingdom Online Measurement (UKOM) publish figures every six months on how long people actively spend online each day.
UKOM, the official cross-industry standards body that measures online audiences using approved comScore data, revealed that the average Briton spent 48% of their online time on smartphones, 38% on desktop / laptops and 14% on tablets from July – December 2016. Average time spent online per person over 18 per day = three hours, eight minutes.
Digital adspend figures from the Internet Advertising Bureau UK for 2016, which include online, mobile and tablet, show digital adspend grew to £10.3 billion, up 17.3% on a like for like basis.
Other figures include:
- Mobile now accounts for over half of all display advertising
- Video was the fastest growing format at 56% on a like-for-like basis since 2015
- Social media display grew 38% to £1.7 billion
What does this all mean for a small or medium-sized business? It means that online is an essential marketing platform to capture and retain customers in the 21st Century.
Being online brings a business many advantages, including accessibility 24/7, social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and YouTube, online reviews, analytics to glean valuable information about your customers and business, brand building and much more.
The internet is the first place most people now turn to for information about a business, or when they wish to research a product or service, or make a booking or purchase. It therefore offers you the perfect place to get yourself in front of customers, at just the right time in the decision-making process.
Of course, it’s imperative that you maximise the opportunities of online marketing as much as possible, within the limits of your resources, both time and money. It may be that you need some help setting up a website and social media platforms, and in setting up online advertising or social media campaigns.
