When having a website created for your business, it can be hard to decide how many pages you need.
The temptation, especially for SMEs, is to keep it brief – just the usual home page, about us page, services and contact. While that’s absolutely fine, it is worth ‘thinking outside the box’ and expanding on this.
The more pages your website has, the more rankings it will get in the search engines. But how do you come up with more content?
You may feel as a small business that you don’t have a lot else to say, but with a few clever ideas, you can create a website that has more pages and delivers your audience interesting and informative content.
Here are a few ideas and tricks of the trade:
We all love these don’t we! They are easy to read snippets of information that answer all the questions we have as consumers without having to read through chunks and chunks of text. The beauty for you is that they are easy to put together – they are basically the questions you probably get asked every day.
Another advantage of the frequently asked questions page is that it really delivers valuable and unique content – something the search engines love.
A news page is a great way of ensuring your website gets regular fresh content. Most of the content on your site will be static so having a regularly updated page is great for your rankings.
A news page can contain snippets about:
- Staff news
- Articles about new products or services
- Information about special offers and discounts
- News from within your industry – latest innovations etc
- Anecdotes/stories about some of your latest projects
- Captioned photographs of your latest work
Tips and guides
Offer your readers some useful tips and guides. This could be anything from information on the best way to use your products to tips related to the service you are providing.
For example, a private tutor could provide tips about how to help your child to study or how to help them cope with exam stress. A landscape gardener could offer tips about how to look after certain plants or trees. Once again, at the risk of sounding repetitive – great for search engine rankings.
Testimonials or customer portfolio
We all love to know that a product or service we are buying is tried and tested, don’t we? Ask your customers if they would mind giving you a quick review. This is another page that can be regularly updated to help tick that fresh content box.
Of course there will be pictures scattered throughout the rest of your site, but a dedicated photo gallery will give you a chance to really show off.
That famous phrase, ‘pictures speak louder than words’ really is relevant on a website because your audience does not always want to sit and read through lots of text.
We all know how enjoyable it can be browsing through pictures. This really is a great way to keep your audience on your website for longer.
Don’t be shy, try to include pictures of willing members of staff or even customers to really bring your gallery to life.
There are lots of other ways to add pages and content to your website, and this will vary from business to business.
