We talk about branding all the time in the marketing world, but what exactly does this mean?
Choosing your message
The first thing you need to do is choose a message. Probably one of the hardest things you have to do as a business is narrow everything you do down to one succinct point. What exactly do you want to be known for? What’s the most important thing about your identity?
- Think about company ethos
- Think about your unique selling point (USP)
- Identify your audience – who exactly are you aiming at?
Presenting your message
Once you’ve worked out what the most important thing is about your business, it’s time to turn this into a catchy slogan/short sentence/logo etc. How you present your message will vary depending on your product services but things to think about are:
- How it looks – are the colours/style right for your identity?
- Is it easy to read and understand?
- Will people remember it?
- Is it catchy?
This may come last, but it is one of the most important things about successful branding.
Colours you choose should be consistent with uniforms/front of shop/existing logos/flyers/vehicles.
Your branding needs to be strong on EVERYTHING. Your message has to be strong on your website, all your social media platforms and again: flyers, vehicles etc. Staff should be very aware of branding and reiterating your message whenever they represent the business.
A final tip is to take some inspiration from the experts – look at some big successful brands that spring to your mind and analyse what it is about them that makes you remember them.
