Remote Configuration
& Remote Access

Your modem supports not just one means of remotely configuring a modem, but two. They operate in slightly different manners but both provide very similar functions. These are termed "Remote configuration" and "Remote access". Both mechanisms allow you to call up a remote modem and alter various settings as if you were talking to the modem from its local terminal connection. This is very useful if you have one or more remote locations that require changes to their modem configuration.

In reading these descriptions you should take care to appreciate that there are always two modems involved in the process; the local modem and the remote modem. As a security feature your modem cannot be remotely configured until specifically enabled by issuing the relevant commands. Once your modem has been so configured, you (or anyone else who knows your password) may phone up your modem and alter its settings.

Conversely, you may use your modem to call another remote modem (with remote configuration enabled) and alter its settings. The following description shows how to set-up and use these features. In addition it also describes the differences between the two techniques.

*C Setting the password :

The first thing you should do is to change the password on your modem from the factory default. The remote configuration password of the modem is set by issuing the *C command. This returns the 'OLD PASSWORD:' prompt. Enter the existing password. The 'NEW PASSWORD:' prompt is then returned. Enter a new password (both alphas and numerics are accepted) which is between 6 and 12 characters long. The password is not case sensitive. You are then asked to confirm the new password by re-entering it. The default password is QWERTY.

WARNING: DO NOT forget your password.

Enabling remote configuration and access

To enable your modem to be remotely configured by another modem, a special value has to be written to register S80. To enable remote configurability, enter the commands as follows:

ATS80=65 <Return> followed by ATZ <Return> to make the change take effect.

Additionally, in order for your modem to be remotely accessed by another modem, a special escape character has to be written to register S202. To enable Remote access, enter the commands as follows: ATS202=42 <Return>

This is the ASCII code for the "*" symbol. Some other code could be used if necessary.

Your modem may now be accessed from a remote location. Remote access may be used from any other modem under all circumstances. Remote configuration may only be used from another modem with remote configuration capabilities, whilst connected in MNP error correction mode.

*R Using remote configuration (Selected models only) :

To access remote configuration mode, the local modem must first be connected to the remote system in an MNP error corrected mode. With this link established, the escape sequence (+++) is issued to put the local modem in on-line command mode.

Typing AT*R <Return> send a request to the remote modem asking it to be placed in remote configuration mode. The remote modem transmits the REMOTE PASSWORD prompt to the local modem and DTE. The password for the remote modem must be entered and is sent upon pressing <Return>.

If the password is verified by the remote modem, the !AT message is returned to indicate that the remote modem is ready to be configured. Commands sent following this do not require the AT prefix.

Using remote access

To activate Remote access from another modem (which we shall call the local modem) a special escape sequence must be entered from normal on-line mode. Issue the escape sequence on the local modem (1 second pause **** 1 second pause). If the remote modem has remote access enabled it responds with:

ONLINE REMOTE ACCESS
REMOTE PASSWORD:

Enter the password for the remote modem and press <Return>. If the password is verified the remote modem will send a ">" prompt before each command. Note that all commands sent must include the AT command prefix, which is not required for remote configuration mode.

Restrictions on remote commands

The A, D, O, Z, \B, *C, N, &T, \F, *L and *P commands are not accepted by the remote modem and some commands may not produce the expected results.

*E Exiting remote mode :

To exit remote configuration mode, issue the *E command. Upon exiting on-line Remote access the normal data link is re-established and the connect message is issued. The exit from Remote configuration is to normal on-line command mode. Enter the command ATO to return to on-line data mode.
