Why does my Pace modem fail to communicate with my computer which is running Windows 95/98?

FAQ192

Ensure that Windows has not loaded any fax or communications software by checking the list accessed from Start, Programs and StartUp.
Click on the START button, click on Programs then click Accessories and finally click HyperTerminal.
The HyperTerminal folder appears on the screen displaying several icons. Double click on the Hypertrm icon. The next window to appear is Connection Description.
In the Name field type "test", then click on OK.

The Phone Number window now appears. In the Connect Using box click the down arrow to the right and select Direct to COM X (where X is the COM port the modem is connected to) then click on OK.
The next window to appear is the COM X Properties Option box. Check that the baud rate is set to 2400 for the test. Click OK.
You should now have your data communications software loaded and you should see a blank terminal screen with a flashing cursor in the top left hand corner.
If an error message is displayed then you have selected the wrong port or some other fax or communications software is running at the same time.

At the flashing cursor type AT&F&W followed by the Enter key. Ensure that you type the command even if it does not appear on the screen as local echo may have been disabled on the modem. You should get an OK response from the modem.
If you did not get a response, then you have a fault with either your communications port or the modem serial cable. If possible test the modem on another computer using a similar process in an attempt to isolate the fault.
