Why does my video appear jerky when I attempt to video conference over a modem link?

FAQ140

When you attempt a video conferencing link over a modem you will find that due to the large amount of information generated, your video image can appear jerky.
The video compression routines within the application software reduce the amount of information transmitted over the modem link, but you may find this is still not perfect.

You will need ensure that the modems used are capable of communicating at 33.6 kbps as well as supporting the V.80 standard, which is a standard for synchronous access video transfer.
We have found that the software or win modems are the most problematic. These modems rely on the processing power of the computer in order to send and receive information, and can use up to 50% of the available resources of the computer.

If you are video conferencing across the Internet, you may be experiencing delays introduced by the ISP. To check for the delay across the Internet, you can ping the computer you are attempting to connect with. The larger the delay in milliseconds the worse the link will be.
You may also find problems with sound cards that claim to be full duplex, but are not able to use this mode in all applications. To determine if this is the cause of your problem you can try selecting half duplex audio within the video conferencing application.
