FAQ104 | Windows 95 OSR2 and Windows 98 introduce some new power saving features for PC-Card (PCMCIA) modems. This turns off the modem until the system requires access to the card itself. 16-bit applications, however, can time out before the card has had a chance to power up completely. If you are using Windows 95 OSR2 on your notebook computer, you will need to follow this procedure to turn on the modem in the power control panel.Click on the START button, click on SETTINGS, then click on CONTROL PANEL. Double click on the POWER icon. Click on the PC CARD MODEM Tab, make sure the checkbox for "DISABLE PC CARD MODEMS WHEN NOT IN USE" is blank. Confirm all of the settings (keep clicking on OK or CLOSE as appropriate) and then restart the computer. After you have performed this procedure, you will find that SuperVoice and other 16 bit applications are able to detect the modem. If you are using Windows 98, the only solution is to upgrade to a 32-bit version of the application that is causing problems. |
