You need to download a program to run on your Windows PC which will allow you to upgrade your modem to the V.90 standard. You should download the particular upgrader for your modem. This will also install the latest modem driver file for Windows 95, 98 and NT 4 if appropriate.

The tables on the right show the improvements that the current version provides over the earlier versions. (The originally supplied versions are still current if your product is not listed.)

Pace 56 Voice & Pace 56 Voice Internal: If you currently have one of these modems with firmware prior to V1.20 you may need to upgrade to V1.20 before upgrading to V.90. Click here to find out how to do this.

Check the current version of code in your modem by looking at the response to the ATI4 command. (In Windows 95 use Control Panel, Modems, Diagnostics, More Info and look at the response to ATI4).

IMPORTANT: When the Save As... dialog box opens, select a location on your PC to save the file. Make sure that you note this name and location, because you will need to find the file to install the software.

What do I do when I have downloaded this file?

  • Disconnect from the Internet: Close your connection to your Internet Service Provider (you can't upgrade your modem while it is in use!).

  • Install the Upgrader: Double click (or otherwise run) the newly downloaded file (check the name on the left) to start the installation of the Pace V90 Upgrade Wizard.
Note: The upgrade for the Solo runs directly and does not perform an intermediate installation step.

  • Perform the Upgrade: The wizard will automatically run once the installation is complete. Follow the on-screen instructions to determine what version of firmware you should install.

  • Pace 56 Voice, Pace 56 Voice Internal & Pace NB 56 Voice: The first time you run the wizard it will recommend installing a new version (V1.30) of K56Flex code. You should then make a test connection to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and run the wizard again (It's in your Start menu if you're using Windows 95 - otherwise you'll find it in C:\PACEV90).

The Pace V90 Upgrade Wizard will check the type of ISP that was called most recently. If that ISP supports the V.90 standard then the wizard will recommend upgrading your modem to V.90. However, should your ISP not be using the V.90 standard then the wizard will recommend leaving the modem as K56Flex. You can run the wizard periodically to check if your ISP has upgraded to V.90.
