Manual upgrade instructions

This page contains instructions and files for Pace modem users who do not have access to a Windows PC, an Apple Macintosh or an Amiga (with Pace 56 Solo).

Use this page only if you are performing a manual upgrade. Switch to another page if you have a Macintosh, Amiga, or a Windows PC.

You need to download the appropriate file (see below) that contains the upgrade for your particular modem. Each ZIP file contains two upgrade files, the one beginning with the letters V90, contains the latest version of the firmware and the one beginning with ITU contains the latest K56flex version.

The tables on the right show the improvements that the current version provides over the earlier versions.

There is no manual upgrade option for the Pace 56 Solo.

To perform this upgrade you must have a Terminal program available on your computer that is able to send text (ASCII) files to your modem. You might want to print out the instructions below so that you can refer to them during the upgrade process.

Choose your modem:

Pace 56 Voice upgrade Pace 56 Voice
(name: "56ext_up.zip")

Pace 56 Voice Internal upgradePace 56 Voice Internal
(name: "56int_up.zip")

Pace NB 56 Voice upgradePace NB 56 Voice
(name: "56nb_up.zip")
IMPORTANT: When the Save As... dialog box opens, select a location on your computer to save the file. Make sure that you note this name and location, because you will need to find the file to install the software.

  • Use an unzip package to extract the files contained within the download file to an empty directory on your hard disk.

  • Go into a terminal package and setup a connection to the port that the modem is using, running at 115200 bits per second (you can use a slower speed if necessary). You may need to refer to the instructions for your terminal software to find out how to do this.

  • Type ATI4 and then press enter. You should see a message identifying your Pace modem. If you do not, you should check your configuration and connections to your modem.

  • Type AT** and press enter. You will receive a message saying Download initiated...

  • Now send the relevant file to your modem via your terminal program (see the description above to decide which file to use). There will normally be an option which says ASCII upload or Send Text File. You will need to choose this, and then select the correct file that you unzipped in a previous step.

  • You will see the upgrade progressing as a series of dots (.) appearing on the screen.
Do not disturb your system while the upgrade is in progress.
When the upgrade is complete (after several minutes), you will receive a message saying Device Successfully Programmed.

  • Now re-initialise the modem to ensure that the new firmware is being used. Type the following command AT!0000EM, followed by enter. You will receive a prompt which looks like:
    0000 : xx
where xx is a 2-digit hex value. Hold down the 0 (Zero) key for 10 seconds. After sending 10 seconds worth of zeroes to the modem, press 'space' twice, and you will receive the message OK. Type ATZ and press enter. The upgrade is now complete!
